Dental Anxiety: Comfort Options That Actually Help

Dental anxiety is common enough that most of our comfort options exist because patients asked for them, not because they’re novel add-ons.

What tends to help most

Noise-cancelling headphones and your own playlist remove the sound cues that trigger a lot of anxiety. A pre-agreed hand signal to pause mid-procedure gives you control without needing to speak with instruments in your mouth. Scheduling your appointment for a low-stress time of day (many patients do better first thing in the morning, before anticipation builds) matters more than people expect.

When to ask about sedation

For more significant anxiety, nitrous oxide (“laughing gas”) wears off within minutes and lets you drive yourself home. For longer or more involved procedures, oral conscious sedation is available at select locations — ask your care coordinator whether your appointment qualifies.

Tell us before the appointment, not during it. A five-minute conversation at booking changes how the whole visit is run.
