Common Situations

What to do for common dental emergencies.

Knocked-out tooth

Handle it by the crown, not the root. Rinse gently if dirty, then try to place it back in the socket or store it in milk. Get to us within 30 minutes if you can.

Severe or persistent toothache

Rinse with warm water and floss gently to rule out trapped debris. Pain that persists, or comes with swelling or fever, needs same-day care.

Broken or chipped tooth

Save any pieces you can find, rinse your mouth with warm water, and use a cold compress on the cheek to reduce swelling until you’re seen.

Lost filling or crown

Not usually a true emergency, but the exposed tooth is sensitive and vulnerable. Call within a day or two so we can re-secure it.

Bleeding that won’t stop

Apply firm, steady gauze pressure for 10 to 15 minutes. If bleeding continues past that, treat it as an emergency and call us right away.

Facial swelling

Swelling that spreads toward your eye or throat, or comes with fever, can signal a spreading infection. Call immediately — don’t wait it out.
